Tintern Abbey, Wales

08 May 2011

As we pulled into the car park for Tintern Abbey it was hard not to miss all of the tour buses. People travelled from all over the world to visit this place. All we had to do was get in our car and drive for a few hours. We are so fortunate to have this opportunity to live in England and explore Europe.

Tintern Abbey was founded by Walter de Clare, Lord of Chepstow in 1131. The abbey is situated on the banks of the River Wye. Tintern Abbey is the first Cistercian foundation in Wales and the second in Britain.

Monastic life at Tintern Abbey ended in 1536 when Abbot Wyche surrendered to King Henry VII. Dissolution of the Monasteries put an end to 400 years of life at Tintern. The lead roof was sold and the buildings fell into ruin.
