Hanbury Hall, England

10 April 2012

Another beautiful day to explore the English Countryside. Today finds us at Hanbury Hall.

The Vernon family first moved to Hanbury in the 16th century and over the years and generations added to the land and estate. Thomas Vernon, a wealthy Chancery lawyer, completed Hanbury Hall in 1706.

From 1791 onwards the mansion was the battleground for several divorces in successive generations. Sir George Vernon was the last Vernon to live at Hanbury. He lived there until he took his life in 1940. After his death his estranged wife returned to Hanbury Hall where she remained until her death in 1962.

The English painter Sir Thomas Thornhill painted the mural on the stairwell showing the Greek hero Achilles.
