Portsmouth, England

13 September 2011

Our last day of the Weymouth Family Tour of Southern England found us exploring Portsmouth. My Great-Great-Great Grandfather left Portsmouth for the east coast of Canada. The Weymouth Family was going back to its roots.

Portsmouth is the UK's only island city. Portsmouth has a long naval history and is home to the world's oldest dry dock. Home to most of the surface naval fleet, Portsmouth was one of the most fortified cities in the world. This did not prevent Germany from destroying many parts of Portsmouth during WWII. It was vital that Portsmouth be crippled since it was such an important naval port.
