Claydon House, England

30 July 2011

Claydon House was built between 1757 and 1771 and has been home to the Verney family since then. Today all that remains is the west wing. There was a twin wing and the 2 were joined by colonnaded rotunda. The plan was for Claydon House to rival Stowe. Financial troubles stopped the building just before completion. The house was reduced in size to its current one.

Claydon House is a fantasy of rococo architecture. The plaster work is extraordinary. The Verney family still lives at Claydon House so only pictures of the plaster work and architecture were allowed. The paintings and furniture are just as beautiful.
