31 July 2011

Donnington Castle is is a medieval ruin that dates back to 1386 when it was founded by Sir Richard Abberbury the Elder. Thomas Chaucer owned the castle before it fell under Tudor control. The castle withstood an 18 month siege during the First English Civil War. The castle was demolished in 1646 by order of Parliament. The clink stone within the castle walls is beautiful.

Highclere Castle, England

Back when i was in high school, I watched the Hallmark Hall of Fame versiob of The Secret Garden on the telly. I was enchanted with the house on the Yorkshire Moors. I had to see this beautiful home with its equally beautiful gardens. Fast forwad a few years and I discovered that the house was not on the Yorkshire Moors and it was called Highclere Castle. Downton Abbey has made Highclere Castle famous.

Claydon House, England

30 July 2011

Claydon House was built between 1757 and 1771 and has been home to the Verney family since then. Today all that remains is the west wing. There was a twin wing and the 2 were joined by colonnaded rotunda. The plan was for Claydon House to rival Stowe. Financial troubles stopped the building just before completion. The house was reduced in size to its current one.

Claydon House is a fantasy of rococo architecture. The plaster work is extraordinary. The Verney family still lives at Claydon House so only pictures of the plaster work and architecture were allowed. The paintings and furniture are just as beautiful.
