Raglan Castle, Wales

08 May 2011

We were in the car as the first light started to spread across the morning sky. We pulled into the car park just as the gates opened. I was thrilled to be visiting my very first moated castle. Our early rise was required since said castle was in Wales.

Raglan castle is a late medieval castle in Wales that dates back to the between the 15th and early 17th centuries. The Herberts and then the Somersets created a lavish fortified castle. Parliament seized the castle in 1646 and held it on behalf of Charles I during the English Civil War. After the castle was slighted. This was a common practice of ruining a castle so it could no longer be used for military purposes. The Somersets did not restore the castle after Charles II took the throne. Raglan Castle was used as a time as a source of local building materials.
