Rievaulx Abbey, England

29 April 2011

Nestled in the hills of the North York Moors is Rievaulx Abbey. The abbey was founded in 1132 as a Cistercian abbey. It was the first Cistercian abbey in the north and was one of the wealthiest abbeys in England. Rievaulx Abbey gained its wealth from mining lead and iron, raising sheep and selling wool. This all ended in 1538 when King Henry VIII dissolved the monasteries.
